Description

Summary

Makruk

Makruk is a chess-like game from Thailand. The objective, as in chess, is to put the opponent's king into checkmate, however, the move sets of the pieces and starting formation are different. Included in this thing entry are STL files and FreeCAD project files in case you wish to modify or remix this set.

Pieces & Movesets:

  • Pawn (Cowry Shell) : starts on 3rd rank and moves like a chess pawn until it reaches the 6th rank at which point it is promoted to a makruk "queen" by flipping the piece over. It then has the same moveset as the "queen" described below. These pieces are also good for checkers sets since they can be promoted by flipping, no stacking/spare pieces needed.

  • Knight (Horse): same move set and starting position as in chess.

  • Rook (Boat): same move set and starting position as in chess.

  • Bishop (Nobleman): can move 1 position along any diagonal as well as 1 position forward. The bishop has the same starting position as in chess.

  • Queen (Seed): can move 1 position along any diagonal. Yes, compared to chess the queen is very nerfed. The queen always starts the game to the right of the king. This is different from chess where the queen sits on her color.

  • King (Feudal Lord): same move set as in chess.
