Train Fiddle Yard Cassette (Now With Optional Dust Covers & Add-On Half Length Cassettes)
Like many fellow railway/railroad modellers, I was running out of space for trains on my layout. To increase train storage without the need of putting trains back in their boxes, a well proven method is the use of train fiddle yard cassettes. The train cassettes allow trains to be driven on to the cassettes & then the loaded cassette with the train is lifted off the layout, for storage until required again.
The cassettes allow you to swap assembled train consists without the need to physically handle them. It also enables you to increase the amount of different trains being run during a running session.
My version of the train cassette, I've designed it to be able to be printed on the Bambu Lab A1 Mini printer. This train cassette is modular, so any number of cassettes can be printed & joined together to make longer cassette units. To join the cassette sections together, apply glue to the cassette ends & also inside the joiners (included in the print files). Then slide the cassettes into the joiners. With cassettes glued & fixed into place in the joiners, slide the joiner top bar into the holes at the top of the joiners. These can be glued if required. However… Please note if using the end stops, don't glue the joiner top bar on the joiners the end stops are being used. This allows the top bar to slide out the way to insert or remove the end stops.
Two end stops are included to prevent trains rolling out of the cassette ends. A full height end stop which slots into the end
With the joiners for the cassettes, I've also designed & included joiners which can be stacked. These sit on the top recess section of the joiners.
The cassettes have recess section for the OO/HO scale track. The track I'm using as seen in the photos, is Peco OO scale code 100 streamline. To fix the track into the cassettes, apply glue in the recess & the place the track in the recess & allow time for the glue to set.
The end sections there are two options for you:
- One being fixed on your layout & the cassette is slid into it. (An optional height packer is included to go under the end section if required)
- The other end section option is to assemble it on to the cassette. With it having two holes, these could be used to sit over two locating guide pegs either side of the track to align the cassette to the track on the layout baseboard.
Further information on the assembly can be found in the Assembly instructions section.
Update 26/4/2026 - Optional Dust Top Covers & also additional half length cassettes added
- A further addition to this print is the addition of dust covers. Keep your trains whilst in storage dust free with the additional top dust covers. The dust covers slot into the top section section on each cassette section & are locked into place by the sliding top joiner bars.
- Additional half length cassette added. This gives you two length cassette options, longer cassette & shorter cassette.
Thank you for stopping by to check out my print & may it be of use to you on your layouts.
Happy Printing
