This set is an **expansion pack** for my existing **MALM drawer organizer system**, which was originally designed for the 40 cm wide MALM chests of drawers. After almost a year, this now provides the expansion and adaptation for the larger 80 cm wide chests of drawers
However, the 80 cm version from IKEA differs in the internal dimensions of the drawers – both in width and depth. As a result, the original grid no longer fits completely, and gaps appear. Instead of developing an entirely new system, this expansion pack was specifically designed so that the **existing system can continue to be used and meaningfully complemented**
Basic Grid of the Existing System
The original organizer system is based on a fixed grid:
- Width:
- 157.5 mm
- 78.7 mm (smallest module)
- Depth:
- 75 mm
- 150 mm
- 225 mm
This grid remains fully intact
Compensating for the Additional Width
In the 80 cm wide MALM drawers, this grid is missing **87 mm in width**.
For this, new **end modules** were developed, which can be inserted on the left or right
New box sizes (width 87 mm):
- 87 × 75 mm
- 87 × 120 mm
- 87 × 150 mm
- 87 × 195 mm
- 87 × 225 mm
Compensating for the Additional Depth (120 mm)
Additionally, the large drawers are missing **120 mm in depth**.
Matching modules have been added for the back (or alternatively, front) closure:
- 120 × 78.7 mm
- 120 × 157.5 mm
- 120 × 87 mm
Additional Depth Combinations
To enable even more flexible layouts, the set includes two further new box sizes:
- 195 × 78.7 mm
- 195 × 157.5 mm
These allow for alternative depth divisions and significantly expand the combination possibilities
This allows even more complex layouts to be implemented cleanly and without gaps
Orientation & Practical Use
All new boxes are now **labeled on the bottom** with:
- the **exact dimensions**
- a **front-side marking**
This simplifies orientation when planning and inserting the modules – especially for larger drawers with many individual parts
An overview graphic shows by example how **existing (dark grey) and new (light grey) boxes** can be combined to completely fill an 80 cm MALM drawer

Not all new sizes are used in the image
Note on Drawer Depths & IKEA Tolerances
During construction, it was taken into account that IKEA apparently has **different generations of MALM drawers** which **differ minimally in internal depth**.
For this reason, the system is deliberately designed with a **buffer of approx. 3–5 mm** in depth
This tolerance range ensures that the boxes can be easily used even with slightly differing drawer dimensions and are not under tension
