Telrad Base for Dovetail Mount

Custom Telrad base designed to attach directly to a standard dovetail style finder mount. This allows you to mount a Telrad without using the original adhesive plastic base, keeping your telescope tube clean and fully reversible.

I used this setup on my C14 to mount the Telrad via a dovetail adapter instead of double sided tape. It provides a much more secure and professional solution.

The Telrad is secured using M4 screws threaded into M4 brass inserts embedded in the printed base. This provides a rigid and durable mechanical connection.

Installing the Threaded Inserts

The threaded inserts linked above are very easy to install. They come with a soldering iron tip that allows you to heat press the inserts directly into the print.

Simply:

1. Install the provided tip into your soldering iron.
2. Heat the insert.
3. Gently press it into the printed hole.
4. Let it cool in place.

The inserts seat cleanly and provide strong, repeatable threads.

Print Notes

I printed mine in PLA and used 3 wall loops to reinforce the holes where the threaded inserts are installed. This gives the insert area extra strength and prevents cracking when tightening the Telrad (but you dont need to tighten it a lot!!).

You may increase infill if desired, but the reinforced walls around the insert holes are the most important structural feature.

Optional Parts

M4 knobs and cap are optional. They are not required for functionality, but they make it much easier to remove and reattach the Telrad without tools. They also improve the overall appearance of the setup.

I've reused them from another model I downloaded years ago and included here for download.
