Description

The Capitol is the seat of the legislative branch (Congress) of the United States of America and crowns Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall

• The Dome: The most distinctive feature is the massive white cast-iron dome It was designed in the 19th century by Thomas U Walter Atop the dome stands the Statue of Freedom
• Architecture: The building is constructed in neoclassical style inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture It consists of a central part with the Rotunda and two wings: the North Wing (Senate) and the South Wing (House of Representatives)
• Symbolism: When the flag flies over the respective wing, it means that the chamber is currently in session At night, the dome is brightly illuminated making it a landmark of the D C skyline
• The Crypt and Rotunda: Inside, directly beneath the dome, is the Rotunda which serves as the ceremonial heart of the building and houses significant artworks of American history
• Construction History: The cornerstone was laid in 1793 by George Washington Since then, the building has been expanded multiple times and rebuilt after fires (e g in 1814 by the British)
