🇫🇷 Description (French)
This bust represents Epicurus, a major Greek philosopher of Antiquity, founder of Epicureanism. The work adopts a classical sculptural interpretation, focused exclusively on the head and upper torso, in accordance with the traditional codes of the ancient bust. The frontal posture and neutral expression convey an attitude of calm, reflection, and inner mastery, intimately linked to the philosopher's thought
This bust is inspired by the most popular and widely diffused representation of Epicurus, deriving from ancient Roman busts preserved and reproduced in numerous works and museum collections. The facial proportions, the skull structure, as well as the characteristic beard and hair are faithfully respected. The sculptural treatment intentionally emphasizes legible volumes and marked features, in order to restore a strong and timeless presence, without idealization or correction of natural asymmetries
Epicurus (341–270 BC) developed a philosophy founded on the pursuit of happiness through moderation, friendship, and the absence of mental disturbance (ataraxia). Contrary to popular belief, Epicureanism does not advocate excess, but a simple life guided by reason and knowledge of nature. His teaching has had a lasting influence on Western moral and philosophical thought
Designed for 3D printing, this bust is part of a philosophical and cultural transmission, offering a faithful sculptural interpretation of a thinker whose legacy remains profoundly relevant today
🇬🇧 Description (English)
This bust depicts Epicurus, one of the major philosophers of ancient Greece and the founder of Epicureanism. Created following classical sculptural principles, it focuses exclusively on the head and upper torso, in accordance with the traditional logic of ancient busts. The frontal pose and neutral expression convey a sense of calm, reflection, and inner balance closely associated with Epicurus’ philosophy.
The sculpture is inspired by the most widely recognized and commonly reproduced image of Epicurus, derived from surviving Roman-era busts preserved in museums and historical references. Facial proportions, skull structure, and the characteristic hair and beard are carefully preserved. The sculptural treatment emphasizes clear volumes and well-defined forms, aiming for a strong and timeless presence without idealization or correction of natural asymmetry.
Epicurus (341–270 BC) developed a philosophy centered on the pursuit of happiness through moderation, friendship, and freedom from mental disturbance (ataraxia). Contrary to popular misconceptions, Epicureanism does not advocate excess, but rather a simple life guided by reason and an understanding of nature. His ideas have had a lasting influence on moral and philosophical thought in the Western tradition.
Designed for 3D printing, this bust serves as a cultural and philosophical tribute, offering a faithful sculptural interpretation of a thinker whose legacy remains remarkably relevant today.
