I wasn't totally satisfied with the build plate holders that I found. So I decided to make one that I really wanted to use.

This Build Plate Organizer - Modular fixes the common frustrations of plate storage. By combining staggered slots with a dual-guide system, it eliminates "track jumping" and makes inserting or retrieving plates a seamless, one-handed operation. Whether you need it free-standing on a desk or mounted to a Sanja3D riser, this modular system adapts to your specific workspace.

Recommended Print Settings

  • Layer Height: 0.2 mm
  • Wall Loops: 3
  • Infill: 15%
  • Supports: None
  • Orientation: Print flat on the build plate (natural orientation)

These settings were specifically chosen to balance print speed with mechanical durability. Utilizing 3 wall loops provides the necessary tensile strength for the snap-fit receptacles, ensuring the clips remain secure under the weight of multiple spring-steel plates. The flat printing orientation maximizes surface area contact, preventing the long guides from warping during the cooling process.

Recommended Filament & Materials

  • Primary Material: PETG (Highly recommended for mechanical flex)
  • Alternative Material: PLA (Suitable for permanent, single-assembly use)
  • Optional Hardware: Large Command Picture Hanging Strips, Skadis pegboard, or Sanja3D Riser.

While PLA prints with high aesthetic detail, PETG is the superior choice for this model due to its fatigue resistance. The snap-fit clips require a material that can deflect during assembly without reaching its brittle breaking point. Additionally, using a light-colored filament is recommended to increase visibility within the flared slot openings, making it easier to align plates in low-light environments.

Assembly & Usage Instructions

  1. Print Components: Print both mirror-image build plate guides and two copies of your chosen mounting bracket.
  2. Align: Position the "pointy clip" of the bracket over the corresponding slot on the side of the guide.
  3. Snap-Fit: Apply firm pressure until the parts click into place.
  4. Mount: Apply Command strips to the brackets or hook them into your Skadis/Sanja3D system.

The engineering tolerances for the interlocking clips are tight to ensure a "zero-play" fit once assembled. The geometry of the receptacle was modified from the original design to provide extra clearance for the mounting clips, ensuring that the modular brackets sit flush against the printer or wall surface without interfering with the build plate's path.

Functional Practicality & Novelty

This model is a ground-up refinement of existing storage solutions, specifically addressing the ergonomics of a high-volume 3D printing workflow. In a real-world scenario—such as swapping from a PLA-optimized Smooth Plate to a PETG-optimized Textured Plate—the staggered height tabs allow you to identify and grab the correct surface by feel alone. The flared, top-to-bottom internal tracks act as a funnel, meaning you no longer have to carefully "thread" the plate into a tiny groove; simply start the plate at the front, and the geometry guides it perfectly to the back.

Features:

  • Staggered slots make it easy to find the right one for your build plate.
  • Wide and flared slot openings make build plates easy to insert
  • Guides on both the top and bottom ensure that once you insert your build plate at the front, it is guided all the way to the back in the correct slot.
  • No worries about your build plate jumping the tracks into the adjacent slots.
  • Multiple mounting systems make it mountable wherever you want.
    • Free-standing - will sit just fine on a desk or table.
    • Command Strips - Stick it to the side of your printer, or on a wall, or on any vertical surface. You could even hang it under a shelf. Command strips are secure and easy to remove with no damage.
    • Skadis - Hang it on your skadis-compatible peg board, whether on your wall, on the side of your printer, or whatever.
    • Sanja3D Riser - Hooks will hang on the various risers from Sanja3D.
  • Each part prints in the strongest natural orientation, with no supports.
  • Parts snap together securely with no hardware.

This model is a heavily modified version of adriangarside's Wall or desk mountable build plate holder for Bambu plates. I reduced the height of the model, and I changed the geometry of the plastic surrounding some slots in order to provide more space for clips. I then designed some clips and created receptacles for the clips. I created mounting brackets for all of the different mounting options.
