MagSafe Ball Joint Magnet Mount 17mm “Gym Buddy”

This is a 3D-printable MagSafe iPhone mount designed to interface with standard 17 mm ball joints.

It allows a MagSafe-equipped iPhone to snap securely onto any 17 mm ball system, making it compatible with tripods, desk mounts, magnetic bases, and gym-style equipment mounts (often sold as “gym buddy” products for viewing or livestreaming).

If you already own 17 mm ball hardware, this mount lets you reuse it instead of buying a proprietary phone holder.

Important Grip Notes (Read This First)

This mount will hold when fully tightened, but keep in mind:

• Polymers are naturally slippery
• Plastic-on-metal grip will never match metal-on-metal

If you want grip closer to commercial mounts:

Liquid Rubber Coating (Optional — Highly Recommended)

This is the single most effective way to improve grip.

Before spraying, thread the locking screw fully into the mount.

This protects the threads so rubber does not get onto them.

Then apply 1–2 very light sprays of liquid rubber inside the ball chamber only.

• Do not spray the threads
• Do not flood the part
• One or two quick passes is enough
• Let cure for 24 hours
• Do not rush curing

This dramatically increases friction and holding strength.

PTFE (Teflon) Thread Tape

Wrap PTFE tape around the locking threads.

• Smoother tightening
• Prevents thread seizure
• Allows higher clamping force
