Description
Powered Retract Wire Spool Holder
An unnecessarily complex solution to wire management
This is a motorized wire spool holder designed to keep small-gauge wires organized while automatically taking up slack. Each wire can be pulled freely when needed, and excess wire is gently retracted to keep everything tidy.
Is it overengineered? Yes.
Does it work anyway? Also yes.
How It Works
All spools sit loosely on a shared rotating drum driven by a small 5V DC motor.
- The motor spins the drum continuously
- Spools that are already fully retracted slip on the drum
- Spools with slack rotate with the drum until the wire is lightly tensioned
This allows every spool to self-adjust without individual motors, clutches, or springs.
Each wire passes through a notched guide that provides just enough grip to prevent the wire from retracting past the guide while still allowing it to be pulled out by hand.
Motor Is Optional
The motor is intentionally weak to avoid over-tensioning the wire and to allow spools to slip when needed.
If you want a manual version:
- Do not print the small drive gear
- Manually rotate the large gear to retract the wire when needed
You’ll need to spin it occasionally, but the system works just fine without power.
Hardware Required
- 10× M3 × 12mm bolts
- 2× 608RS Bearings Amazon Link
- 5mm copper tape (used for the retraction switchs)
- 5V DC motor Amazon link
Everything else is 3D printed.
Why This Exists
- Keeps multiple wire types organized and accessible
- Prevents loose wire from becoming desk spaghetti
- Demonstrates a simple mechanical slip-clutch concept
- Because building the complicated version was more fun
Notes
- Designed for small-gauge wire (30AWG) Amazon link
- Motor torque is low by design
- This project favors simplicity of motion over strength or speed
- Printed in Orange PETG-HF, but honestly could probably be printed on any filament - orange PETG was what I had lying around
