The Totally Not Over-Engineered Wall Hook

Why use a passive wall hook when you can have a mechanism?

 

No floppy middle state here. A true magnetic bistable latch drives the hook open or closed with a deeply satisfying snap.

 

Smooth, repeatable motion comes from a Ø5 mm steel dowel pin running in bronze sleeve bearings, turning what should have been a simple hook into a small piece of precision hardware.

Yes, it’s unnecessary.
That’s the point.

Bill of Materials (BOM)

Assembly

0. Check M3 fastener fit

Check the fit of all M3 holes before assembly. These are intentionally designed on the tight side for strength and alignment.

  • If needed, run an M3 screw through the holes a few times, or
  • Lightly drill the holes with a 3.0 mm drill bit to clean them up.

Do not oversize the holes.

1. Install the sleeve bearings

Carefully press the bronze sleeve bearings into both sides of Part C.
Use the Ø5 mm dowel pin as a guide to keep them aligned and square.

2. Check hinge alignment

Slide the dowel pin through Part C and verify that it rotates smoothly.

  • If rotation is not smooth, place Part C on a heated print bed with the dowel pin installed.
  • Allow the part to cool completely with the dowel pin left in place, then recheck for smooth rotation.

3. Install magnets in Part C

Apply a small drop of cyanoacrylate (super glue) into each magnet pocket.
Insert the two magnets into Part C, ensuring the same magnetic pole faces outward on both magnets.

4. Install magnets in Parts A and B

Apply a small drop of cyanoacrylate (super glue) into each magnet pocket.
Parts A and B each contain three magnets arranged in an arc.
Insert the magnets so the polarity follows this sequence along the arc:
attract → repel → attract (relative to the magnets in Part C).

5. Final assembly and functional check

Assemble Parts A, B, and C using the M3 screws and hex nuts. Tighten the fasteners evenly until snug, without over-tightening.

Cycle the hook through its motion and verify smooth rotation and a clean, snappy action. The hook should snap decisively open and closed with no binding.

Because Part C is designed with only 0.2 mm clearance, light sanding of the mating surfaces may be required if print quality is not perfect. Sand conservatively and recheck fit frequently.
