Description

Some decisions benefit from structure.

Responsible Drinking Decision Support (RDDS) is a formal, physics-based advisory instrument designed to assist with responsible drinking decisions in semi-official environments.

The dial is configured with a 7:1 weighting in favor of WATER, ensuring that moderation is statistically prioritized and clearly signposted.
This distribution reflects a reasonable, balanced, and defensible approach to decision-making.

When the pointer is spun freely, Newtonian mechanics will reliably guide it to the correct outcome.

The result is consistent, repeatable, and fully deterministic.

Designed to resemble a permanently installed guidance device rather than a game or novelty object, RDDS is intended to quietly reinforce good decision-making in home bars, workshops, and other environments where structure is appreciated.

As with all properly documented decision support systems, the process is reasonable — regardless of the outcome.

Intended Use

Spin the pointer when guidance is required.
Observe the result.
Act accordingly.

Repeated testing is encouraged and yields identical results.

Design Notes

  • Single wall-mounted decision support instrument
  • Free-spinning pointer using a simple mechanical pivot
  • No electronics, software, or calibration required
  • Physics-based and statistically reasonable

Version 1.1 – Beverage & Orthographic Expansion

Following user feedback indicating diversified beverage preferences, additional dial variants have been introduced: Beer, Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Wine, and Cocktail.

It has been suggested that altering the selected beverage might influence the statistical likelihood of receiving a non-water outcome.

Controlled testing confirms that this assumption is unfounded.

All variants retain the established 7:1 weighting in favor of WATER.
Outcome distribution remains statistically stable across beverage categories.

In recognition of regional linguistic standards, both “Whiskey” and “Whisky” spellings are included.
Orthographic variation has likewise demonstrated no measurable impact on probabilistic behavior.

RDDS continues to function as a mechanically stable, culturally inclusive, and statistically reasonable decision support instrument.

Repeated testing is encouraged and consistently reinforces these findings

Mounting & Print Notes

  • Plate 1 is a complete, fully functional RDDS unit
Printed as-is, it includes the full dial and pointer and requires no additional parts.
  • Additional plates are provided for separate printing workflows
Note that the dial should be printed with 100 % infill for best decision support.
  • Designed for wall mounting with double-sided tape or adhesive
  • Optimized for AMS multi-color printing
  • No supports required
  • PLA works well
