Bill of Materials
Description
This book nook has a few magical elements:
- Whenever you open and close the door, the scene magically changes to show a different one of 3 environments.
- Each scene is bigger on the inside - a magical portal in your book case
- The three scenes contain lots detail and hidden elements to inspect - keep an eye out for the cat relaxing in each scene :)
If you're someone who likes building dioramas, a great deal of the fun of this project is customizing and adding detail to each scene. Each of the 3 scenes represents a cozy space for reading within one of my favorite genres:
![]() | Historical FictionThis room has a backlit fireplace and a full case of books along with some scrolls & stained glass. |
![]() | FantasyThis Halfling house features a round window and a book case full of lanterns. As you may expect, there's also plenty of paperwork, food and a stocked pantry. |
![]() | Science FictionThis future scene may be a bit dreary, but it still has a cozy spot to curl up an read a good book. |
Ok but how does it work?
I admit it - this book nook isn't actually magic. It uses a facade of book spines to hide a large chamber & the motion for the rotation is purely mechanical. Check it out behind the scenes to see how the illusions work:
![]() | The facade of the project is covered with the spines of books - this leads to a surprise when the door is open and shows a space larger than should be possible. Printable versions of book spines are available for those without access to tools to craft these from real books. These use the following free fonts: Bree Serif, Young Serif, Staatliches, & Patua One. |
![]() | Whenever you close the door, it pushes a part along a track. This has a rubber band-held tab that can rotate the chamber in one direction but slip past the rotation pegs in the other direction. |
![]() | Whenever you close the door, it rotates a drum so that different scenes are displayed. Heavy bearings are used given the weight of the assembly. Magnets within the case and on the underside of the drum help align the scenes with the door frame.
A slip ring is used so that each scene can receive power and is lit from two directions. |
![]() | Want to make your own scenes? Each uses the same connectors for the base and the same alignment at the top. To make it easier, you can download the ZIP file from the document section which has STLs for the floor, walls & ceiling of a scene. Just be sure not to make anything wider or taller than these bounds so that it won't collide with the internal structures. |
Is This Project for You?

This has been a fun project to design but I realize it's not for everyone - I don't want to discourage anyone from making this book nook but here are a few things to consider before jumping in:
- Make sure your book shelf is deep enough: the final volume of the project is 236x200x243mm
- This project has many detail elements that can be arranged and placed with glue. For some users, part of the fun is detailing the dioramas - this is a craft project!
- The rotation of the drum takes a specific touch - you need to close the door just hard enough so that it rotates correctly and doesn't get stuck between two scenes. I've found that I was able to get the hang of it quickly but pushes that are too hard or too soft can break the illusion (this doesn't cause any harm - you can just rotate the drum to the next scene). To see (and hear) that in action, check out this video:
Printing, Post-Processing & Notes
- As you can seen in the assembly instructions, I cut the spines off of real books to glue to the front of the case. However, I will also be providing printable book spines that you can use as-is or use for glueing dust jackets.
- I created this model so that it's possible to print in multi-color without painting. However, this requires many filament colors and I expect that most makers will choose to print and paint the dioramas.
- ABS is used for the rotating base due to the weight on this part and to minimize creep. I've also tested this part in PLA but haven't been able to use it for sufficient time to determine if creep would be an issues.
- TPU for AMS is used for one small part just to slightly reduce noise of parts contacting each other. This part can be printed in PLA instead.
- In addition to Bambu filaments, I use Polymaker Muted Pastel Banana, Muted Green and Marble Sandstone which are listed as Generic filament in the 3MF. I also used Polymaker Galaxy Dark Green which is listed as Bambu PLA Sparkle in the 3MF (as I have also printed with this filament).
- This is my first project where I experimented with AI assistance on mesh creation. All of the project was modeled traditionally except for the cat in each scene. These meshes were created with Hunyuan - after which I re-topologized them and edited them for printing.
- The greebles in the sci-fi scene are CC0 generations from the Spock add-on for Blender
Updates
- 2/13/26
- Reduced the infill percentage on the main scene parts to slightly reduce print time and weight.
- Slightly trimmed the back of the scene parts so that they have more clearance during final assembly.
- Added an additional print profile with book spines that can be printed vs. made from real books.
- Added SceneTemplate.zip to the Documentation so that users can more easily build their own rooms
