Description

This self-watering mason jar planter is a passive semi-hydro / semi-ponics planter designed to improve reliability and ease of use compared to typical wicking planters.

It uses capillary wicking to deliver water from a reservoir to the root zone, making it ideal for houseplants, semi-hydroponics, and low-maintenance plant care. The design works with both traditional potting soil and PON / soilless substrates.

Sized specifically for a 1L Le Parfait mason jar, the clear reservoir makes water levels easy to monitor while keeping a clean, minimal look.

Required Materials

Assembly Instructions

  1. Install the wick
    • Thread the wick through the three holes in the bottom.
    • Tie a double overhand knot on each side to secure it.
    • A toothpick helps pull the knot tight so it sits flush with the bottom.
  2. Seat the planter insert
    • Push the bottom piece past the retaining dimples.
    • This takes a bit of pressure, but once seated it stays firmly in place.
  3. Optional splash guard
    • The splash guard currently requires glue to secure.
    • If there’s interest, a snap-fit version may be added later.

Printing Notes

  • No supports required
  • Standard PLA works well
  • PETG recommended if concerned about long-term exposure to moisture
  • Print orientation as uploaded
