Description

Inspired by Victorian industrial architecture, this highly detailed book nook depicts the interior of a decommissioned clock tower. Though officially abandoned decades ago, the clock still functions and the tower is rumored to house a mysterious resident.


Despite the intricate detail, the model is designed to be accessible to all skill levels and doesn't require a lot of materials. It snaps together without glue, screws or tools, and doesn't require an AMS. It uses very few colors and still looks great unpainted. If you decide to paint it later, it can be easily disassembled for better access. I've disassembled my copy over 10 times while recording the assembly instructions, and it still holds up.

I’ve loved miniatures and dioramas for as long as I can remember, so this project is a labor of love, was a huge learning experience, and I enjoyed every minute of it. If you like the model and would like to see more like it, please let me know.

Printing

⚠️ I've added two separate print profiles:

  • One for large parts that can be printed fast
  • One for small parts that needs to be printed slow.

Considerations:

  • All parts rely on Arachne wall generation to preserve detail and are designed specifically for a 0.4 mm nozzle
  • Small or thin parts may come loose
    • Prevent this by printing the first layer slowly
  • Large parts may warp
    • Prevent this by making sure to clean your bed and keep an even temperature
  • None of the parts require support
  • None of the parts require AMS
  • Three of the parts are multi-color (windows and clock face), but are limited to one color per layer, meaning you can print it using a simple manual color change

I recommend the Bambu Lab Cool Plate SuperTack, which has been a game changer for me during this project, and almost  completely removes both of these concerns.

Brick parts - PLA Matte Terracotta or Dark Red

  • Print the back wall with 5 bottom layers to prevent light leak
  • If you experience warping, use an outer brim
  • To further reduce the chance of warping, use Lightning infill

Wrought/cast iron parts - PLA Basic Black

  • Clock hands benefit from being printed individually so as to not get nudged from nozzle travel
  • Be careful when removing thinner parts from the plate as they can be fragile depending on the filament used

Wood parts - PLA Matte Dark Brown

  • When printing the floors, use adaptive layer height to preserve the details of the planks
  • Use Lightning infill to reduce filament usage and minimize warping
  • The chair has built-in supports

White parts - PLA Matte Bone White

  • The mattress needs an outer brim to not fall over
  • The bathtub has built-in supports

The wood burner embers - PLA Matte Mandarin Orange or any yellow or orange filament

  • PLA Matte Terracotta works for this if you want to keep everything to four colors, but it's not the best looking
  • Print using adaptive layer lines as the top of the part benefits from being printed using thin layers

A note on the clock face and windows:

The clock face and windows are meant to be printed together and specifically using 0.12 mm layer height. If printing manually, choose a light filament as the base, and at layer 7, switch to a black filament for the numerals and other details.

Assembly

The assembly requires no glue, no screws and no tools.
