Tikbalang are towering, equine-headed guardians of the deep woods, feared and revered in equal measure. On the Prime they are known simply as tikbalang, rarely offering personal names to outsiders. Names carry spiritual and Underworld significance and are shared only among their own kind or within Limbo. When spoken, these names often resemble old Tagalog phonetics.
Common Names
- Male: Ghika, Kalumpang, Negross, Phampa
- Female: Balite, Lagay, Nate, Sempca
Lore & Nature
Tikbalang serve as wardens of wild places and liminal boundaries. They patrol forgotten trails, guard ancient trees, and watch over hidden crossings between the mortal realm and Limbo. Their temperaments mirror their purpose: most are steady and neutral, protecting the balance of their domain. Some become chaotic and volatile when their forests are threatened. In Limbo, however, they adopt a strict, lawful demeanor as disciplined gatekeepers.
Tall, muscular, and long-limbed, they stand higher than most humans, their silhouettes unmistakably equine. At night, their pale eyes glow faintly, granting them uncanny sight through darkness and mist.

Flavor Summary
A tikbalang is a silent sentinel of roots and shadows—swift as a galloping horse, strong enough to hurl would-be riders aside, and wise in the ways of wilderness paths and spirit gates. To meet one is either a blessing or a warning, depending on why you’ve entered their forest.
