Description
Pullstart spacer and drill guide to build your very own Puch Maxi pullstart on a budget. I wanted a pullstart for my bike but I was too cheap to spend €200 on a kit so I decided to make my own. Aside for the reducer, high M10 nut and the pullstart I had all of the hardware already, so the full kit wound up costing me 15-20€. The pullstarter has now been on my bike for roughly 2000 kilometers and has yet to fail.
Print parts in PETG or more heat resistant material.
- Take your existing ignition cover and drill out the top dimpled part that has the logo, I think I used a 50 or 60mm hole saw for this.
- Replace your flywheel nut with a 20mm high M10x1 nut (fine thread)
- Screw a M10x1 to M8x1.25 reducer into the high flywheel nut
- Screw a normal M8x1.25 stud (about 20mm-ish long) into the reducer, which is in the M10 nut.
- Screw the pullstart pawl onto the M7 stud.
- Put on the ignition cover and put the drill guide over the pawl to drill the mounting holes for the pullstart
- Remove the ignition cover again
- Mount the pullstart together with the pullstart spacer onto the ignition cover. I used countersunk M6 allen key bolts for this mounted from the inside up because they are low bolts to avoid them hitting the flywheel. Use lock nuts for fastening the pullstart.
If you attempt the use the pullstart and you hear a ringing sound, this means the pullstart is too close to the pawl and you will need shims between the pullstart spacer and the pullstart itself. This is designed for a new model ignition cover in combination with a HPI ignition. If you have a different cover or a different ignition the pullstart will still work, but you may need to shim.
