The Legacy of the "Benchy"
What is a Benchy?
The 3DBenchy is the worldâs most famous "torture test" for 3D printers. Originally released in April 2015 by Creative Tools, it was designed as a jolly 3D-model that is specifically challenging for 3D printers to replicate accurately. Over the years, it has become the universal language of the 3D printing communityâa way to compare machines, settings, and materials.
Why this version?
I have taken the core principles of the classic benchmark and optimized it specifically for every Bambu Lab filament. After countless hours of fine-tuning and iterative testing, this model is pre-configured to ensure that whether you are printing with PLA Basic, PETG-CF, or ASA, you get the most accurate results possible on your X1, P1, Â A1 or any other printer.
Technical Breakdown: What are we testing?
This model is a concentrated gauntlet of geometric challenges. Here is exactly what is being analyzed during the print:
- Surface Finish: The smooth hull tests for ghosting, ringing, and consistent extrusion.
- Overhangs: The front bow and side windows test your cooling and layers at steep angles.
- Bridging: The roof and door frames test the printer's ability to extrude plastic across open air without sagging.
- Dimensional Accuracy: Precision holes (chimney) and specific lengths test if your printer's steps are calibrated.
- Stringing & Retraction: The tiny details and gaps test how well your printer handles travel moves.
- First Layer Adhesion: The large flat bottom surface ensures your bed leveling and Z-offset are perfect.
Standard Benchmarking Parameters
To keep results consistent, this model adheres to the classic professional dimensions:
- Length: 60.00 mm
- Width: 31.00 mm
- Height: 48.00 mm
- Chimney Inner Diameter: 3.00 mm
- Bridge Length (Front Window): 10.50 mm
REAL USE CASES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH FILAMENT:
- PLA Basic: General purpose prototyping, decorative models, and everyday prints.
- PLA Matte: High-quality aesthetic prints with a smooth, non-reflective finish that hides layer lines.
- PLA Silk+: Decorative items requiring a high-gloss, metallic-like shiny finish.
- PLA Translucent: Vases, light diffusers, and models that benefit from light passing through.
- PLA Pure: High-purity, easy-to-print filament for clean, reliable prototypes and standard daily models.
- PETG Basic: Durable parts requiring higher impact resistance and temperature stability than PLA.
- PETG Translucent: Strong, chemical-resistant parts with transparency for lighting or liquid containers.
- PETG HF: High-speed printing of functional parts with excellent flow and durability.
- ABS: Tough, heat-resistant engineering parts that can be vapor-smoothed with acetone.
- PLA Tough+: Mechanical parts needing the ease of PLA printing but with significantly higher impact strength.
- PLA Wood: Aesthetic models with a wood-like texture and appearance, containing real wood fibers.
- PLA Sparkle: Decorative pieces with embedded glitter to hide layer lines and add shimmer.
- PLA Marble: Architectural models and statues with a realistic stone-like speckled finish.
- PLA Metal: High-end decorative items with a metallic sheen and heavy feel.
- PLA Galaxy: Dark, shimmering prints ideal for space-themed models or deep-texture aesthetics.
- PLA Glow: Glow-in-the-dark novelty items, safety signs, and nighttime displays.
- PLA Aero: Lightweight aircraft parts and RC planes using active foaming technology.
- TPU for AMS: Flexible parts requiring specific stiffness to be compatible with the AMS system.
- TPU 95A HF: High-speed printing of flexible, rubber-like functional seals and dampeners.
- TPU 85A: Very soft, highly flexible parts with high elastic recovery and grip.
- TPU 90A: Balanced flexibility and hardness for gaskets, phone cases, and tires.
- PLA-CF: Stiff, matte-finish parts with carbon fiber reinforcement for high dimensional stability.
- PETG-CF: High-strength functional parts with improved stiffness and heat resistance.
- ABS-GF: Extra tough engineering components reinforced with glass fiber for heat and impact.
- PA6-GF: Industrial parts requiring high strength, wear resistance, and thermal stability.
- PA6-CF: High-performance structural parts needing extreme stiffness and heat resistance.
- PAHT-CF: High-temperature nylon parts for automotive or industrial use with carbon fiber.
- PET-CF: Stiff, moisture-resistant industrial parts with excellent thermal and chemical resistance.
- PC: High-strength, transparent engineering parts with excellent heat resistance.
- PC FR: Flame-retardant parts for electronics, batteries, and aerospace applications.
- ASA: UV-resistant outdoor functional parts, car accessories, and signage.
- ASA-CF: High-stiffness outdoor components with carbon fiber for improved dimensional stability.
- ASA Aero: Lightweight, UV-resistant outdoor models and lightweight structural parts.
- PPA-CF: Ultra-high performance carbon fiber parts for extreme heat and mechanical stress.
- PPS-CF: Top-tier chemical and heat resistant industrial parts with carbon fiber.
- Support for PLA: Easy-to-remove interface material specifically for PLA prints.

- PVA: Water-soluble support material for complex geometries and internal cavities.
- Support for PA/PET: High-temperature support material designed for nylon and PET-CF filaments.
Troubleshooting & "Real World" Variations
Even though I have spent a significant amount of time optimizing these profiles, 3D printing is never "one size fits all." If your results vary, consider the following:
- Environmental Factors: Humidity is the #1 enemy. If you see bubbles or "zits," your filament might need drying (especially PETG and TPU).
- Hardware Maintenance: Differences in belt tension or nozzle wear between two identical printers can lead to different results.
- Filament Variation: Even within Bambu Lab filaments, different colors can sometimes behave differently due to pigments.
- Fine-Tuning: If my profile doesn't look 100% perfect on your specific machine, use it as a high-quality baseline and adjust your Flow Rate or VFA settings by Âą1-2%.
Community Feedback
I am constantly updating these profiles based on new filament releases and firmware updates.
