Solar System Magnets

A colorful set of Solar System magnets based on flat 2D vector graphics, converted to 3D using MakerLab Image to Keychain and further refined with custom OpenSCAD tools.

Each planet (and the Sun) is a separate 3MF file, and prints as a single, multi-color magnet. It can be used as decoration for fridges, and on classroom whiteboards, as a tool in teaching astronomy.

Planet diameter is ~50 mm.

Updates

March 2026:
Pluto has been added to the Solar System magnet set.
Pluto, a dwarf planet, is 4 cm in diameter, while the major planets are 5 cm, and has the same rounded edges as the rest of the magnets.

May 2026:

Other dwarf planets (Ceres, Eris, Haumea, Makemake) have been added to the Solar System magnet set. As dwarf planet Pluto they are 4 cm in diameter, and have the same rounded edges as the rest of the magnets.

How it was made

1. Original 2D flat planet graphics
2. Converted to 3MF using MakerLab Image to Keychain
3. Rounded-edge negative STL generated with OpenSCAD
4. Magnet pocket added as a negative cylinder inside the 3MF

This workflow keeps geometry clean while allowing easy customization.

Customization

Inside the 3MF you can:

• change magnet hole diameter
• change magnet hole depth
• move magnet pocket position if needed

This allows compatibility with different magnet sizes and thicknesses.

Combine with Name Tags

You can find / generate accompanying name tag magnets using the post: Custom letters, numbers & name tags (OpenSCAD), allowing you to generate:

• Planet and Sun name labels (3MF for English already included)
• Custom words
• Short descriptions

Great for classroom labeling and interactive boards.

Combine with Moon Phases

For learning and visualizing Moon phases, the Sun and Earth magnets can be combined with magnets from the post: HueForge Moon Phases – Token Set + Container. Together, they form a modular Solar System + Moon phase learning system.

Printing Tips

• Layer height: 0.2 mm
• Walls: 3+
• Infill: 15–20%
• No supports needed
• Print face-down for best surface quality

Insert magnet with a drop of superglue after printing.
