The statues of Roald Dahl's Matilda Wormwood and Donald Trump were unveiled in October 2018 in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, England—the village where Dahl lived for 36 years—to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the classic children's book. The installation was designed to show a modern-day reimagining of Matilda, then in her 30s, continuing to fight against injustice.
The Story Behind the Concept
- The 30th Anniversary Survey: The Roald Dahl Story Company surveyed over 2,000 British residents to ask who the strong-willed, telekinetic Matilda would stand up to if she were alive and in her 30s in 2018.
- Trump as the "Modern Trunchbull": Donald Trump (then U.S. President) was voted the top choice, with 42% of the vote. Proponents of the statue noted that many people saw similar traits in him to Miss Trunchbull, the cruel, bullying headmistress from the original 1988 book.
- Symbolism of Resistance: The statues were intended to highlight the timeless message of the book: that even the smallest, most powerless people can defeat the "Trunchbulls" in their own lives.
- The Statues' Design: Created by a team of artists including Drew Roper, the display featured a four-foot-tall Matilda standing with her hands on her hips, looking defiantly up at a six-foot-tall, frowning Trump. Matilda was positioned standing on a stack of books, including Moby Dick and Great Expectations.
- Location: The temporary statues were placed in a field opposite the Great Missenden library, which was the real-life inspiration for the library in the book where young Matilda devoured literature.
The project, which also included new drawings by original illustrator Sir Quentin Blake depicting an adult Matilda, was meant to highlight how the character's message of courage and persistence remains relevant.
