šŸŽø VolSwell Guitar Volume Knob Travel Limiter – Expressive Swells, Consistent Control

This is a small but powerful accessory designed to solve a very specific (and very real) problem for guitar players who use volume swells as part of their playing style.

I first noticed this technique watching Yngwie Malmsteen, where the volume knob is constantly swelled up and down with the pinky on the picking hand to create violin-like phrasing. When I started practicing this myself, I ran into an issue I’m sure others have experienced:

My pinky would slowly slip down the volume knob over time.

That meant what started as a controlled swell from ~7 to 10 would eventually turn into a much smaller (and weaker) swell from 1 to 3. The problem wasn’t grip—it was too much available knob travel.

The Solution

Instead of adding grip, this attachment limits the rotation range of your existing volume knob.

  • The limiter press-fits directly onto the volume knob
  • A small alignment window lets you set your minimum desired volume
  • Once installed, the limiter makes contact with the pickup height screw, acting as a physical stop
  • This constrains the knob rotation between your chosen setting and 10

You can also rotate it past ā€œ10ā€ to flip the behavior—limiting travel from 1 up to a chosen maximum, depending on how you play.

Designed For (and Tested On)

  • Fender Stratocaster-style volume knobs
  • Designed around the knob style shown in the photos
  • No permanent modification required
  • Installs and removes quickly

Important Compatibility Notes

This design relies on a few key elements:

  1. Knob style
This model was designed and tested with the knob shown in the photos. Other knob styles may or may not fit without modification.
  2. Pickup screw as a stop
The limiter uses the pickup height screw as a physical stop.
    • If your guitar doesn’t have a usable screw in this location, the design may need adjustment
    • Alternate solutions could include another screw, hardware feature, or even a small taped-on printed stop
  3. Other guitars
While designed for a Strat, this may work on other guitars with similar layouts. If it doesn’t, I’m happy to review and potentially redesign for specific applications.

Interested in Other Versions?

If there’s enough interest, I’m absolutely open to:

  • Supporting different knob styles
  • Adapting the design for other guitar layouts
  • Creating alternate stop solutions
