Description
Rite of the Heavenly Steeds
“Where fire tests, spirit is revealed.”
🜂 Concept & Intent
Rite of the Heavenly Steeds is a sculptural vessel conceived as a ritual object rather than a purely decorative vase.
The horses are not placed onto the surface — they emerge forcefully from within it, breaking through flame as if released by trial. In Chinese history and mythology, the Heavenly Horses (天馬) were believed to be gifts from Heaven itself: tireless, powerful, and won only through hardship.
Fire in this piece is not ornamental. It represents resistance, refinement, and transformation. The flowing ribbons act as ceremonial banners — symbols of fate, ritual, and the forces that bind before release. Together, the elements depict a moment of passage: where restraint gives way to motion, and spirit is revealed through fire.
This work was created in response to the 2026 Year of the Fire Horse, interpreted as a ritual of emergence rather than a literal zodiac form.
🜁 Symbolism & Calligraphy
The ribbon inscriptions are written vertically in seal-script–inspired characters, echoing classical ceremonial markings rather than modern text. The characters are intentionally fragmented and partially obscured — meant to be discovered, not read at a glance.
Key symbols include:
- 天馬 — Heavenly Steeds
Legendary war horses believed to be sent by Heaven, symbolizing endurance, power, and divine mandate. - 火 / 焚 / 煉 / 化 — Fire, burning, refinement, transformation
Fire as a force that tests and reshapes rather than destroys. - 命 / 儀 / 出 / 道 — Fate, rite, emergence, the path
Symbols of ceremony, destiny, and passage through resistance into motion.
These markings function as a ritual inscription woven into the form itself — not decorative text.
🜃 Versions
This model is provided in multiple configurations to support different printers and material setups:
- Single-color version — optimized for simplicity and consistent surface finish
- Dual-color version (H2D) — separates horses and ceremonial ribbons from the flame body
- Planned variant: three-color version with black calligraphy accents (H2C compatible)
All versions share the same geometry and design intent.
🜄 Sizes
- 150 mm — compact version suitable as a pencil holder or desk vessel
- 200 mm — small vase option
- 250 mm — medium vase (recommended balance of detail and presence)
- 330 mm — large statement piece (advanced print; longer runtimes)
🜔 Printing Notes
- Profiles are intentionally lightweight, using 2 walls to preserve surface detail and reduce material usage.
- Because of the thin walls, waterproofing is required for wet applications. Sealing is recommended rather than adding walls.
- Increasing wall count does not noticeably improve water tightness, but it does significantly increase material use and print time.
- Strong tree supports were used intentionally
- Supports are required for the horse heads.
- Supports are optional elsewhere, but using support material produces cleaner results, especially around emerging forms and ribbon intersections.
🜍 Materials & Finish
- PLA was used for aesthetic-focused prints and display pieces.
- PETG is recommended for functional or wet use due to improved water resistance.
Color suggestions:
- Flame body: matte red → orange transition for a fired-clay appearance
- Horses & ceremonial ribbons: champagne silk for contrast without gloss
- Calligraphy (H2C version): matte black for a charred, inscribed effect
Matte finishes are strongly recommended to maintain the ceramic, ritual quality of the design.
