Description

Full Description / Project Story

This project was created while upgrading the lighting in my house, which was remodeled in the mid-2000s and outfitted with over 40 identical recessed can lights.

During the LED retrofit process, several of the original trim rings cracked, and many others showed noticeable yellowing from long-term UV exposure. I initially assumed replacement trim rings would be easy to find online, but quickly discovered that:

  • Matching replacements were unavailable
  • Off-the-shelf goof rings were either too wide, had the wrong profile, or didn’t match the original aesthetic
  • Custom-manufactured trim rings would cost $15+ per piece, which quickly becomes expensive when replacing dozens of fixtures

To solve this, I designed a low-profile, minimal-coverage trim ring that closely matches the original look, provides clean edge coverage, and prints efficiently.

The result is a simple, durable replacement ring that:

  • Preserves the original visual profile
  • Covers drywall cut imperfections
  • Restores uniform appearance across large lighting installations
  • Costs only a few cents per ring to print
  • Brim optional for ASA/ABS to prevent edge lift.
  • Supports not required.

    Ring Specs:
    Inner diameter is 5.88 inches ≈ 5 7/8 inches.
    Outer diameter is 7.34 inches ≈ 7 11/32

Can you make one 8.5 inside and 9.5 outside? I’m new to this and don’t know how to create yet.

You could try upscaling it in the app until the inner diameter meets that 8.75 inch requirement but it might not meet that outside requirement. I could come up with another one pretty quick if its just a ring. If you need the Lip on the inner ring I need a measurement.

@btruss If you set size in the scale mode to x = 238 y = 238 z = 2 You will get your a rough inner diameter to 8.5 inches but the outer diameter will be 9.25 inches. If you need an exact ring I would use a digital caliper for getting measurements of original ring your trying to replace. I bought a cheap one on amazon and it worked great for this project.

it doesn’t have to be perfect. I believe 8.5 would be perfect for it to have a 1/4” lip on the inside at 8.75. thanks.
