A New Version by @夏小福

Updated 20260129

Someone said the rotating shafts were jammed after printing, so I uploaded a new model —“Ring&Gift Box-larger tolerance”. It should be better.

If you printed it with PLA-Marble, you can still use the original one.

Last year, I taught a class for graduate students in Industrial Design Engineering at ZJU. I tasked them with designing a model that could be 3D printed all at once, minimizing the need for support as much as possible. One brilliant student, Liu Haohan (刘浩瀚)@夏小福, designed a mechanical open box with a rotating heart—an ideal choice for a Valentine's Day gift. Afterward, I helped refine the details and designed a new base for the ring, transforming it into something suitable not only for Valentine's Day, but also for marriage proposals. The mechanical open structure adds a ceremonial touch to the moment.

With Liu's permission, I will be responsible for publishing this model. As a token of gratitude for his creative contribution, I will share half of the points (including boosts) earned by this model over the next five years with him, just as I did for my previous models, “Swatter” and “Wind-Up Walking KIWI”.

The assembly is very easy. If you printed the box with PLA-Marble (which contains built‑in lubricating additives), you don’t need to apply grease or WD‑40 to the gears; for other filaments, a small amount of grease or WD‑40 is important.

I added a negative cylinder to the ring base (Ø22 × 3 mm) in the print profile — adjust the size in Bambu Studio to match your ring. I also uploaded the STEP file of the rotating base so you can design alternate models or scale the entire box for other gifts.

Thanks to my wife for lending her wedding diamond ring for the photos. Happy Valentine’s Day!
