🔴 General Description

Racing Safety Net Quick Release – 3D Printable

This is a functional 3D-printable racing-style safety net quick release, inspired by real motorsport mechanisms and designed for sim racing rigs, cockpits, displays, and motorsport-themed setups.

The mechanism is fully mechanical and spring-loaded, featuring a clear and tactile “push to release” action that feels solid, intuitive, and satisfying to use.
The long pull strap ensures high visibility and easy reach, closely resembling real racing applications.

The design focuses on:

  • clean proportions
  • solid mechanical feedback
  • easy printing and assembly
  • minimal color changes (optimized for FDM printers)

⚠️ This model is NOT a certified safety device.
It is intended for sim racing, decorative, educational, and hobby use only.

🔧 Key Features

  • Fully mechanical push-to-release mechanism
  • Designed specifically for FDM 3D printing
  • Optimized geometry for smooth movement and reliable engagement
  • Long pull strap for visibility and ergonomics
  • Modular design – easy to customize or remix
  • Tested with a standard ballpoint pen spring
  • Includes flat and pre-bent pull strap versions

🖨️ Printing & Design Philosophy

The model is designed to be:

  • printable with standard materials (PLA / PETG)
  • assembled using minimal hardware
  • accessible to users without advanced post-processing tools

Optional parts are included to support different mounting and assembly preferences.

⚠️ Safety Disclaimer

This project is NOT intended for real automotive or racing safety use.
Do NOT use in real vehicles, competitions, or any situation involving personal safety.

🔩 Required Hardware & Accessories

🧰 Fasteners

  • M3 × 15 mm screws
  • M3 × 10 mm screws
  • M3 × 6 mm screw
  • M3 nut

🌀 Spring

  • standard pen spring
    • Length: ~17 mm
    • Outer diameter: 4–4.5 mm

The spring reaches full compression at the correct release point.
A common ballpoint pen spring works perfectly and is easy to source.

🔗 Other

  • key ring / split ring (for the pull pin)

📝 Notes

  • No special hardware required
  • All fasteners are standard metric M3
  • Spring preload and travel are already optimized in the design
  • Tested with commonly available pen springs

🔥 Pull Strap – Flat & Pre-Bent Versions

This project includes two versions of the pull strap:

▶️ 1. Pre-Bent Pull Strap (Recommended)

  • Supplied already bent in the correct shape
  • Ready to use without heat forming
  • Ideal for plug-and-play assembly
  • No tools or post-processing required

This version is designed to be printed as-is and assembled directly.

▶️ 2. Flat Pull Strap (Thermoformable)

  • Supplied flat
  • Can be bent manually using heat (hair dryer or heat gun)
  • Allows custom angles and fine adjustment
  • Useful for advanced users or custom cockpit layouts

Thermoforming tips:

  • Use a standard hair dryer
  • Heat gradually until the plastic becomes flexible
  • Bend gently and hold position until cooled
  • Avoid overheating or open flames

📝 Important Notes

  • Both versions are fully compatible with the mechanism
  • Only one pull strap is required for assembly
  • The pre-bent version is recommended for most users

🖨️ Recommended Print Settings

These settings have been tested and optimized for strength, reliability, and print quality using standard FDM printers.

🔹 General Settings

  • Nozzle: 0.4 mm
  • Layer height: 0.2 mm
  • Walls / Perimeters: 6 walls
  • Top / Bottom layers: 6
  • Infill: 15% (Gyroid or Grid recommended)
  • Supports: Yes (only where required)
  • Build plate adhesion: Not required (brim optional for small parts)

🔹 Material

  • PLA – recommended for ease of printing
  • PETG – recommended for higher durability and slight flexibility

⚠️ Avoid very soft materials (e.g. TPU) for mechanical parts.

🔹 Supports

  • Supports are required only for specific parts
  • Use “from build plate only” when possible
  • Support density: 10–15%
  • Support interface layers recommended for cleaner surfaces

🔹 Orientation Notes

  • Main body: print horizontally for best strength and roundness
  • Pull strap (pre-bent version): print as provided
  • Pull strap (flat version): print flat on the build plate
  • Pin and small mechanical parts: print vertically for best tolerances

🔹 Color Change Optimization

The model is designed to minimize color changes:

  • Most parts are single-color prints
  • Multi-color details (labels/text) are optional
  • Fully compatible with single-extruder printers

🧪 Tolerances & Fit

  • All tolerances are optimized for standard FDM printers
  • No sanding required in most cases
  • Light deburring may improve smoothness if needed

📝 Print Notes

  • Do not scale the model
  • Print at 100% scale
  • For best results, use a well-calibrated printer
