Description
Proper Filament Storage: Practical Guide for Dry Storage
To keep filament optimally dry, elaborate or expensive solutions are not required Instead of printing many special inserts for silica gel, it is recommended to use small organza bags measuring 7x9 cm These bags are very inexpensive—a pack of one hundred costs less than seven euros—and are ideal as containers for rechargeable silica gel, which acts as a desiccant
Advantages of Organza Bags
The organza bags are almost transparent, offering the advantage of easily observing the silica gel's condition The desiccant is initially orange and darkens with increasing moisture absorption until it eventually turns green This makes a separate hygrometer unnecessary
Filling and Regenerating
A funnel and a small scoop are suitable for filling the bags Once the silica gel is saturated, it can be easily regenerated: simply empty the bags and heat the silica gel in a heat-resistant dish until it returns to its original orange color After cooling, the desiccant can be refilled into the bags and reused
Storage of Filament Spools
For storage, the filament spools are placed into vacuum bags—the same type used for food—along with a filled desiccant bag A small air pump is used to create a vacuum, effectively protecting the filament from moisture This simple and cost-effective method enables trouble-free and long-term storage of the filament
