Description

The Nelson Mandela [Madiba]  stands as the towering centre point of Nelson Mandela Square, serving as a powerful tribute to South Africa's [Madiba] first democratically elected president. Unveiled on March 31, 2004, to coincide with the 10th anniversary of South African democracy, the square was formerly known as Sandton Square before being renamed in honour of the global icon.

The bronze monument is noted for its joyful depiction of Mandela performing the "Madiba Jive," a dance that symbolized the spirit of reconciliation and celebration for the nation. It was the first public statue of Nelson Mandela [Madiba]  to be erected in the country and has since become one of the most photographed landmarks in Johannesbur Imposing Scale: The statue stands 6 meters (roughly 20 feet) tall and weighs approximately 2.5 tons .Intricate Design: Sculpted by South African artists Kobus Hattingh and Jacob Maponyane, the figure captures detailed features, including shoes that measure nearly 1 meter in length.Symbolic Pose: Unlike more formal monuments, this statue portrays Mandela in a characteristic "Madiba shirt," emphasizing his approachability and the joy of a free South Africa.
