Knight Hagen von Tronje
Print Profile(1)

Description
This is a replica of the Hagen statue in the city of Worms in Germany. It depicts Hagen von Tronje sinking the Nibelung treasure (Kriemhild's treasure) into the Rhine, which he stole because Kriemhild began giving away parts of the treasure to the people, and he feared an uprising.
Knight Hagen von Tronje is a central, ambivalent figure in the German Nibelungen saga, known as a loyal, yet also intriguing and unscrupulous vassal of the Burgundian kings. Out of loyalty (and greed for the Nibelung hoard), he murders the hero Siegfried, initiating the tragic destruction of the realm. He is a fearless warrior and cunning advisor, whose dark deeds lay the foundation for the spiral of revenge that ultimately plunges all characters into ruin, until he himself is killed by Kriemhild.
Characteristics and Role
- Loyalty: He is fiercely loyal to King Gunther and his brothers, acting as their protector and most important advisor.
- Intrigue and Betrayal: His loyalty takes a dark turn when he murders Siegfried to secure the Nibelung hoard for Burgundy and control the balance of power.
- Fearless Warrior: He is a powerful and brave fighter who remains steadfast even in battle against the Huns.
Ambiguity: He is a "lonely, sinister hero", considered a traitor and murderer, but also a protector of the realm.
Important Events
- Murder of Siegfried: Hagen slays Siegfried under a pretext to take possession of the Nibelung hoard.
- The Nibelung Hoard: He secures the treasure for Burgundy, which becomes a central conflict.
- Death: In the final battle, he is killed by Kriemhild, who uses Siegfried's sword against him, whereupon Hildebrand slays Kriemhild.
