Parametric Spool Adapter (SCAD)

Description
šÆ Parametric Spool Adapter for AMS
Because one spool size is never enough, and neither is my patience for re-modeling.
The Problem
So there I was, staring at my shiny new Sunlu 250g spools (140mm hole, because why follow standards?), trying to figure out how to make them work with my AMS. After the third "well, I could just model another adapterā¦" moment, I had a revelation:
What if I just⦠made it parametric? š¤Æ
The Solution
This OpenSCAD spool adapter is fully parametric! Just punch in your spool's measurements, and boom ā a perfect-fit adapter every time. No more re-modeling. No more guessing. No more "close enough" (we both know it wasn't).
⨠Features
- šÆ Simple Settings ā Just 4 numbers to change for most spools:
- Spool diameter (center hole)
- Rim thickness
- Dish depth (how much it curves inward)
- Wall thickness
- š§ Advanced Tweaks ā For the tinkerers among us:
- Spoke patterns (weight reduction go brrr)
- Grip teeth (snap-fit mechanism)
- Adjustable corner radii
- Custom spoke counts
- 𦷠Snap-Fit Hook ā A clever compliant mechanism that gently grips your spool. It snaps in, it snaps out, no drama. Like a good relationship.
- šØ Weight-Saving Spokes ā Because material isn't free and your AMS doesn't need to lift weights at the gym.
ā ļø A Note on Tolerance
I haven't built in any tolerance adjustments ā your measurements go straight into the model as-is. Every printer is a little different, so you'll want to factor in your own tolerances.
For example, if your spool hole measures 140mm and your printer typically needs 0.2mm clearance, bump that value up to 140.2mm. Test fit is your friend here!
Default Configuration
This model ships configured for the Sunlu 250g spool with:
- Spool diameter: 140mm
- Rim thickness: 2.7mm
- Dish depth: 5mm (gives it that satisfying curve)
- Wall thickness: 2.2mm
Print Settings
- Material: PETG or PLA (PETG if your AMS runs hot)
- Layer Height: 0.2mm works great
- Infill: 15-20% (the spokes already save weight)
- Supports: None needed! It's designed to print flat
But Wait, There's More!
Section View Mode š
Toggle Show_Section_View = true to see a cross-section of your adapter. Great for debugging or just feeling like a CAD wizard.
Spoke Math š
The number of spokes is calculated from Spoke_Angle:
- 30° = 12 spokes
- 45° = 8 spokes
- 60° = 6 spokes
You know, in case you want to count them at 2 AM.
Why OpenSCAD?
Because sometimes you want a parametric model that actually lets you change things. No proprietary slicers. No cloud dependencies. Just pure, unadulterated code that generates geometry.
Plus, I can version control it with Git. My future self will thank me. (He probably won't, but let's pretend.)
Compatibility
Designed for:
- ā Bambu Lab AMS (200mm adapter diameter)
- ā Any spool that fits the bore size
- ā Your sanity when switching between different brands
