Description

ScanPilot – Modular Document Scanner Rig

I got tired of document scanning apps being expensive, overloaded with features, or full of ads – and of constantly renaming files and folders by hand.

So I designed and printed my own document scanner rig and built a minimal iOS app (ScanPilot) around it.

This model is a stable, adjustable scanner stand for smartphones, designed to give you:

  • consistent camera distance
  • repeatable framing
  • clean, shadow-free scans
  • fast, semi-automated digitization workflows

The rig is optimized for flat documents (receipts, letters, invoices, stickers, manuals) and works with any scanning app – but it’s specifically designed to pair nicely with ScanPilot, my lightweight iOS scanner app.

About the ScanPilot iOS App

ScanPilot focuses only on what’s necessary:

  • fast capture
  • manual crop with auto-analyze option
  • structured file naming (Type / Sender / Date / Folder modes)
  • clean PDF export
  • no ads, no subscriptions, no tracking

The app is currently in TestFlight beta.

Want to join the beta and get the app for free?

Print this model, post a comment with photos of your build, and send me a DM. I’ll send you a TestFlight invite.

Printing Notes

  • Designed for easy printing without supports
  • Modular height adjustment
  • Works with most smartphones
  • Matte filament recommended to reduce reflections
  • Dont use Withe Filaments Black recommended

I printed the ScanPilot with my Bambu Lab A1. I did have to split the base plate so it would fit on the print bed, but that wasn't a big problem. The rest of the print went absolutely smoothly. The parts fit together cleanly and the whole thing feels very stable in use. A well-thought-out solution for document scans with a smartphone. Highly recommended!

How did you split the baseplate? Would you have an A1 remix? :)

great print. I added 2 more pins to secure the base on the main rods nicely. had to try 2 different document scanner systems before I tried this one and this is on point. (and I’m here for the TestFlight, hehe)

Just finished printing and it looks good so far, but the app would be useful now.
