Summary 

This is a versatile set of printable motor mounts designed to help model rocket enthusiasts paint, display, and store their fleets. Designed to fit standard motor sizes (Estes, etc.), these mounts feature a clever geometry to ensure they fit even well-loved rockets with slightly bent motor tubes.

The Problem & The Solution

  • Bent Tubes? No Problem: Standard cylindrical plugs often get stuck if the cardboard motor tube is slightly crushed or bent. These mounts feature a 5-degree side cut (flat spot) along the cylinder, allowing them to slide easily into imperfect motor tubes while still providing a secure hold.
  • Universal Handle: Each mount features a tapered bore (7.5mm to 8.5mm). This creates a tight pressure fit for either a 5/16" or 8mm wooden dowel.

Sizes Included The files include mounts for the four most common motor diameters:

  • Mini: 13mm
  • Standard: 18mm
  • Large: 24mm
  • Extra Large: 29mm

Use Cases

  1. Painting Handle: Insert a dowel to hold the rocket while spray painting. No more paint on your hands!
  2. Display Stand: Drill 5/16" or 8mm holes into a nice piece of lumber to create a vertical display row for your collection.
  3. Storage "Tree": Use PVC pipe and dowels to create a corner storage tree to keep rockets safe and out of the way.

Assembly

  • Standard: Push the dowel into the tapered hole. The friction fit is strong enough for painting and display.
  • Permanent: A drop of CA glue can be added to the dowel for a permanent bond.

To Customize the Dowel Hole

Simply open the f3d file in fusion and click on “modify → Change Parameters.”  Change the DowelTopSize and DowelBottomSize to be the width of your dowel plus or minus a little bit.  The “top” is the inside diameter of the dowel hole, the “bottom” is the diameter of the hole you first slip the dowel into.  (See the image below).
