Description

Updated note on 3/17/26:

I got a report that sometimes the shells might warp a little bit and bend up on the corners, even though the magnets hold it closed. It just doesn't look great. I had this issue with certain filaments and certain build plates. The problem is on P-series Bambu printers, the size is nearly as wide as the build plate so an inconsistencies in heating or filament can cause bowing with stored stresses in the plastic. I experienced this on occasion (although I didn't have an issue with matte filament printed at the print settings included. The good news: here is a trick to fix it on one of my petg prints, I put a couple pennies in the middle and a little clamp on each side to hold the corners down. Then, put it on a piece of cardboard in your printer and warm it up a bit. Not super hot. I think I set it at 70 degrees and left it in there for 20-30 minutes. Take it out, let it fully cool off and then it should take all, or at least most of the warp out. I hope it works okay.

Also, for print settings, please take a look at the print profile - it talks about the magnets and how to install them.

***

I went searching for a travel backgammon set that still felt like proper backgammon: real dice cups, heavy checkers, beautiful dice, and a system that folds up cleanly to tuck into a bag, RV cubby, or shelf. I couldn’t quite find it… so I designed my own.

This model is the board frame for that system – the folding shell that holds the plates, checkers, dice, cups, and doubling cube in a compact, travel-friendly form factor while still feeling like a serious board on the table.

I drew inspiration from other makers, but the final geometry, fit, and details are 100% my own design.

Design Notes

  • Sized to feel like a “real” board, not a tiny travel toy.
  • Folds up cleanly to keep everything together on the go.
  • Designed to work with weighted checkers (pennies inside) and precision dice for a satisfying hand-feel.
  • Frame looks great in matte PLA or CF-filled materials (carbon-fiber PETG is great for durability and a subtle shimmer).

Feel free to customize it — logos, words, or art on the plate faces (printed face-down on a smooth plate) look fantastic.

We’ve been playing on this set for a while now, and the whole family appreciates it.
I hope you enjoy building and playing on it as much as we do.
