Short History of St. Joseph:
St. Joseph is a revered figure in Christian tradition, known as the husband of the Virgin Mary and the earthly father of Jesus. A humble carpenter, he is honored for his faith, obedience, and devotion to family. Over time, he became recognized as the patron saint of families, homes, and eventually real estate.
The tradition of burying a St. Joseph statue to help sell a home dates back to the Middle Ages. It is believed to have begun with European nuns who buried medals of St. Joseph when seeking land to build convents. This practice later evolved into burying a statue when homeowners wished to sell their property, asking for St. Joseph’s intercession and guidance. Passed down through generations, the tradition is still widely practiced today by people of many backgrounds.
Tradition Note:
The common custom is to bury St. Joseph upside down near the “For Sale” sign. Once the house sells, the statue is often displayed in the new home as a sign of gratitude.
