Sun Valley Ski Resort Diorama
This diorama is my tribute to Sun Valley, capturing the character of the mountain through real terrain data, iconic buildings, and lots of tiny skiers in motion.
The base terrain was created using real Sun Valley topography, generated in Blender with the Blender GIS add-on. This gives the mountain its authentic slopes, ridgelines, and overall feel, rather than a hand-sculpted approximation.
Scattered across the mountain are several iconic Sun Valley lodges and buildings, including:
- The Roundhouse Restaurant
- Seattle Ridge Day Lodge
- River Run Base Lodge
Each structure is simplified to fit the scale of the diorama while still being instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with the resort.
The scene is populated with skiers from my previous skiing diorama, but this time I’ve also added ski patrol skiers, bringing a little more life and realism to the mountain. A fun (and honest) part of printing these tiny figures is that when you first start, out of a batch of six skiers, you’ll probably only manage to save a couple. Over time though, as you dial in your settings and handling, you’ll get good enough to preserve all six consistently.
To help add variety and depth, I’ve included two different styles of trees that you can mix and match across the mountain. I’ve also designed a Sun Valley logo that can be glued onto the side of the base to finish off the display.
My hope is that you use all of these components—terrain, buildings, skiers, patrol, trees, and logo—to create your own unique version of Sun Valley, whether that’s a faithful recreation or a more personalized interpretation of the mountain.
