Background story: The Unfurling

Name: Kharvax, called Ragged-Wing
Kharvax was born among a hard clan that revered dragons as gods and feared them as disasters. When the clan found a half-buried draconic relic—an ossified heartstone from an ancient wyrm—they did what desperate people do: they tried to use it.

The rite was meant to grant strength to their hunters. It did, briefly. Then it began to rewrite them.

Kharvax survived the rite, but survival came at a price: the heartstone did not bless him; it seeded him. His scales hardened into plates. His pupils narrowed. Hunger sharpened into something predatory and absolute. And, in moments of stress, his body tries to complete the transformation—bone pushing, sinew tightening, a membranous “wing” tearing free like a new limb.

He hides beneath a hood because the world does not forgive monsters, and because he is never fully certain which version of himself will speak next: the man who bargains… or the dragon that takes.

Kharvax travels as a tracker, raider, and mercenary, not because he loves violence, but because battle is the only place the change makes sense. In the chaos of blood and fire, the metamorphosis feels right—and that frightens him more than any enemy.

His goal is simple and terrifying: find the dragon whose heartstone began this curse, and decide whether to end the bloodline… or finish becoming it.

Character Sheet (D&D 5e) — “Becoming a Dragon” build

Core

Race: Dragonborn (choose a color; example: Black for acid)
Class: Barbarian 5 (Path of the Beast) — reflavored as Draconic Metamorphosis
Background: Outlander (Exile / Clan Survivor)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Level: 5
Proficiency Bonus: +3

Ability Scores

  • STR 18 (+4)
  • DEX 14 (+2)
  • CON 16 (+3)
  • INT 8 (−1)
  • WIS 12 (+1)
  • CHA 10 (+0)

Combat Stats

  • AC: 15 (Unarmored Defense: 10 + DEX + CON)
  • HP: 55
  • Speed: 40 ft (Fast Movement)
  • Initiative: +2

Saves

  • STR +7, CON +6

Skills (suggested)

  • Athletics +7
  • Perception +4
  • Survival +4
  • Intimidation +3

Racial Traits (Dragonborn)

  • Damage Resistance: matches ancestry (e.g., Acid for Black)
  • Breath Weapon: DC 14 (8 + PB 3 + CON 3), damage per your table’s dragonborn rules (PHB or Fizban’s)

Class Features (Barbarian 5)

  • Rage (3/day): bonus action; resistance to B/P/S, +2 damage on STR melee, advantage on STR checks/saves
  • Reckless Attack: advantage on STR melee attacks; enemies get advantage vs you until next turn
  • Danger Sense: advantage on DEX saves vs effects you can see
  • Extra Attack: 2 attacks per Attack action
  • Fast Movement: +10 ft speed while not in heavy armor

Subclass: Path of the Beast (reflavor: “Draconic Unfurling”)

While raging, you partially become a dragon. Choose one each rage:

  • Claws (recommended; matches the miniature): 1d6 slashing + STR; once per turn when you attack with claws, you can make one additional claw attack as part of the same action.
  • Bite: sustain yourself (temp healing) as the predator takes over.
  • Tail: defensive reach—your body grows into a weapon.

Attacks (typical turn at level 5)

Raging Claws: +7 to hit, 1d6+4 slashing + 2 rage damage.
With Extra Attack + Beast claws, you commonly make 3 claw attacks/turn (2 attacks + the claw bonus attack once per turn).

Breath Weapon: DC 14, elemental damage per ancestry (situational burst).

Equipment (thematic)

  • Hooded wrappings, bone charms, trophy-teeth
  • Javelins (hunting spears), knife
  • “Ragged wing” mantle (flavor now; becomes literal wings later)

Roleplay Traits (metamorphosis hooks)

  • Trait: Speech becomes clipped under stress; you “taste” fear like scent.
  • Ideal: Freedom. No chain, no crown, no god owns your blood.
  • Bond: The heartstone shard you carry—proof, weapon, and temptation.
  • Flaw: When the change starts, you chase the fight too hard; stopping feels like suffocation.

Optional (if you want the transformation to feel more like “true dragon”)

These are fully compatible additions—choose any that your DM allows:

  • Feat (Dragon Fear or Gift of the Chromatic Dragon): reinforces draconic presence/breath theme.
  • Progression note: at higher levels you can represent “more dragon” by switching the character to (or multiclassing into) Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer for wings later, or by pursuing a narrative path toward Shapechange/True Polymorph as an endgame “become the dragon” moment.
