Joints for 20×20×1.5 mm tubes – 2-way and 3-way – For modular metal structures – 3D Printed

Set of 3D printable joints designed to join 20×20 mm metal tubes with a thickness of 1.5 mm (https://www.leroymerlin.it/prodotti/profilo-standers-in-acciaio-grezzo-grigio-opaco-l1m-l20xsp1-5xh20-mm-87825768.html), ideal for creating modular structures, frames, supports, and custom projects.

The joints were designed in Fusion 360 and include:

  • 2-way joint (90°)
  • 3-way joint (90°)

Both top and bottom versions are visible in the images, the latter prepared for the insertion of a threaded bushing (https://www.leroymerlin.it/prodotti/bussola-autofilettante-con-esagono-in-ferro-grezzo-grigio-l-8-x-h-8-x-sp-13-mm-12-pezzi-85651850.html), useful for mounting adjustable feet or other threaded accessories.

🧩 Fastening System

The joints do not use tightening screws:

fastening to the tube is done by gluing with two-component epoxy glue, which ensures a solid and durable bond.

This solution allows for:

  • greater aesthetic cleanliness
  • absence of through holes on the tube
  • uniform distribution of forces

🧱 Materials and Recommended Print Settings

To achieve maximum structural robustness, it is recommended:

  • Material: ABS (recommended)
  • Layer height: 0.2 mm
  • Walls: 8-10
  • Infill: 80–100%
  • Supports: only in the central area
  • Orientation: as shown in the images
  • brim recommended

The use of PLA is possible for light applications, but not recommended for structures subject to prolonged loads or stress.

🔧 Assembly

  1. Thoroughly clean the inside of the tube
  2. Apply two-component epoxy glue on the joint
  3. Insert the joint into the tube until it stops
  4. Allow to fully cure according to the glue instructions
  5. (Optional) Screw the adjustable foot into the threaded bushing of the bottom joint

📐 Typical Applications

  • Modular tube structures
  • Workbenches
  • Frames and technical supports
  • Self-supporting structures
  • Custom projects and prototypes

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Designed for 20×20 mm tubes – 1.5 mm thickness
  • Always check your tube's tolerances before gluing
  • Not designed for safety-critical structural applications or high dynamic loads
