Description

This 3D-printable newel post cover provides an elegant solution for concealing unsightly screw holes and repair marks at the base of a round, slightly tapered newel post in a stair railing. I designed it to hide the damage caused by removing wooden plugs to install heavy-duty structural screws in order to fix a wobble in the railing.  This collar eliminates the need for tedious sanding and refinishing after repairs, and allows you to go back and do more repairs in the future by sliding the cover upwards for access to the base of the newel.

The model is specifically sized for round posts, tapering from 74mm at the bottom to 70mm at the top, and features a delicate filleted cove in the top to allow it to more seamlessly fit in.  For different installations, the file can be easily scaled in your slicer to match the specific dimensions of your staircase hardware.

The cover prints in two halves so that you can fit it around the newel post.  I used CA glue to stick the two halves together.  The cover can then be rotated to conceal the seam.  In my case, I rotated the cover to land behind balusters.
