Description

Carpet Crawlers – Modular Rubber Band Drum Racer

Carpet Crawlers are high-traction, drum-driven rubber band racers designed to perform best on carpet and textured surfaces. Instead of traditional wheels, these racers use a large front drive drum that stores energy when wound and releases it in a powerful, controlled launch.

This project is a modular system, allowing you to swap front drum designs to tune speed, grip, and acceleration depending on your surface and racing style.

Note:

  • Multiple rubber bands are likely needed. (I typically use 2 rubber bands that have been doubled up)
  • Lubrication can be added at the hub for faster and more consistent performance. (WD40 or Graphite dry lubricant both work well)

Included Parts

  • Main Body – Rigid chassis compatible with all drum types
  • Front Drive Drums – Four interchangeable designs (see table above)
  • Rear Drum – Standard rear support drum
  • Hub – Engages during wind-up to store energy
  • Rubber Band Installation Tool – Simplifies band installation and setup

Print Profiles

This model includes two well-organized print profiles:

1) Solid Color – Sorted by Racer

  • Each plate contains a complete racer
  • Single-color prints
  • Ideal for quick printing and performance comparisons

Each plate includes:
Main body, hub, rear drum, and one selected front drum.

2) Multi-Color – Modular Build

  • Plates separated by component type
  • Designed for multi-color printing and customization
  • Print once, swap drums freely

Plate layout:

  • Plate 1: Main body
  • Plate 2: hub
  • Plate 3–6: Individual front drum designs
  • Plate 7: Rubber band installation tool
