Description
Bridging the Gap Between Customers and Service Staff
I am excited to share my latest engineering project: a 3D-printed Interactive Signage System designed to streamline communication in busy restaurant environments.
š” The Concept
The core challenge was to find a silent, efficient, and intuitive way for guests to signal staff. This solution is a table-top signage system that uses a controlled "flip" motion to display service requests.
š ļø Technical Breakdown & Smart Locking Mechanism
The design evolved through a rigorous iterative process, focusing on Compliant Mechanisms and User Interaction:
- The Hook & Tension System: To prevent the sign from rotating unintentionally, I integrated a Manual Latch (Hook).
- Elastic Support: The mechanism uses a small rubber band to provide constant tension, keeping the hook securely engaged.
- User Interaction: To flip the sign, the user simply pulls down the hook to release the lock, allowing the sign to rotate smoothly.
- Innovative Flexure Hinge: The sign rotates on a custom-designed Flexure Hinge, optimized for 3D printing to ensure durability without extra moving parts.
- DFM (Design for Manufacturing): The system consists of modular parts optimized for 3D printing with 45-degree angles, eliminating the need for support material and reducing waste.
šÆ The Impact
This prototype demonstrates how Mechanical Logic and Rapid Prototyping can solve everyday service bottlenecks. Itās a low-cost, durable, and highly functional solution for the hospitality industry.
