Description

I have several micro-computers attached to an openGrid system in my network closet — a Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant, plus a couple of GMKTech mini-“NUC” style PCs powering my home lab. While they do have internal fans, I found they still run warmer than I’d like.

I had some tiny 50mm USB-powered fans in a bin, so I pointed one at the Pi, and the CPU temperature dropped by over 10°F. Problem solved… except that now the fan was precariously balanced on a bunch of cables like a Cirque du Soleil performer who took a wrong turn into my wiring.

So I designed a proper solution: compact 50mm fan mounts compatible with both openGrid and Multiboard systems. Snap them into place, secure the fan, and keep your devices chill and happy.

Versions

There are two versions included:

  • an open-face mount (no built-in grille)
  • a grille version with protection on one side

Each of these versions come in four variations with peg lengths 10mm, 20mm, 30mm and 40mm.

Most 50mm fans already have support arms around the motor acting as a grille on the opposite side - but if you’d like matching protection on both sides, I’ve also included a standalone grille file.

The fan can be mounted using M3×20 screws. Or, depending on the orientation and your level of trust in gravity, two-sided tape or glue dots will work just fine.

Fan Recommendation

50mm fans tend to follow standard dimensions — so most should fit perfectly. Here’s the specific model I’ve been using with great results:
