Gen4 Toyota Tacoma Modular Center Console Storage

WHY THIS MODEL?

Because commercial companies charge WAY TOO MUCH ($40+ USD) for a molded ABS tray that costs less than $1 in material.  So I decided to design my own.  I get there is R&D, marketing and margin costs included in the commercial pricing, but it only took me a few days to design, test and print this model.  My modular design is much more flexible to suit most needs.

According to AI searches, the most popular things that people put in center consoles of vehicles include:

• Phone chargers and cables
• Sunglasses & glass cleaner
• Hand sanitizer
• Tissues/napkins
• Chapstick/lip balm
• Pens & pencils
• Sticky note pad
• Change & cash
• Medicine & first aid items
• Mints & gum
• Multi-tool or small flashlight

So, taking all those things into consideration, I developed many divider/tray options to help organize things from the list above.  Read on… 

THE MODULAR TRAY APPROACH

The whole thing is designed to be modular – print the Core Console Tray and then choose the bottom and top tray options to suit your needs.  The bottom and top tray inserts are optional, but if you want to use a top tray, you must either print a bottom Divider Frame or a complete Bottom Solid Tray since the Top Solid Tray rests on the bottom tray option.

TRAY DIVIDER OPTIONS

Common tray divider options are available for the bottom and top:

• Open tray design
  • Top one-third
  • Split top one-third
  • Horizontal half
  • Vertical half
  • Split half
  • Quad

TPU LINERS

Each tray option (core, bottom and top) has a corresponding pre-fitted TPU liner option you may print as well.  While certainly optional, they do help prevent your items from that annoying rattling sound while driving.

HOW TO GET STARTED

OPTION 1 (The Minimalist): CORE CONSOLE TRAY ONLY

Print the Core Console Tray and optional TPU Liner.  Skip the optional trays.

The benefits of this option are:

• Quickest to print
• Least amount of filament used
• Allows for storage of larger items up to 60mm deep

OPTION 2 (Filament Friendly): CORE CONSOLE TRAY WITH BOTTOM DIVIDERS AND SOLID TOP TRAY

1. Print the Core Console Tray and optional TPU Liner
2. Select and print a Bottom Tray Frame Divider option
3. Select and print a Top Solid Tray option and optional TPU Liner

The benefits of this option are:

• Filament friendly since you aren’t printing a full bottom tray
• Only print one bottom TPU Liner
• You can experiment with different bottom tray divider options to fit your needs 

OPTION 3 (Most Versatile): CORE CONSOLE TRAY WITH SOLID BOTTOM TRAY AND TOP TRAY

1. Print the Core Console Tray
2. Select and print a Bottom Solid Tray option and optional TPU Liner
3. Select and print a Top Solid Tray option and optional TPU Liner

The benefits of this option are:

• Gives you the most durability & strength
• Bottom Solid Tray is removable with contents in place

PRINTING AND USAGE TIPS

Here’s how to get started in three easy steps:

1. Print the Core Console Tray and optional TPU Liner
2. Choose and print a Bottom Tray option and optional TPU Liner
3. Choose and print a Top Tray option and optional TPU Liner

I used black PETG-CF and a lighter color of TPU filament for the liners for my 2024 Gen 4 Toyota Tacoma. A lighter color TPU filament can help find things in an otherwise dark area.  If you really want to make things brighter, choose a lighter color of PETG-CF for the trays.

RECOMMENDED FILAMENTS

For the Core Tray and Tray insert options, I recommend Bambu PETG or Bambu PETG-CF for strength and high-heat tolerance.  I do not recommend PLA since the interior temperatures of a vehicle often reach above 100F (38C).  PLA tends to deform around 122F (50C). 

For the TPU Liners, I recommend Bambu TPU 95A HF.
