Description
The “Sovol SH-02” Filament dryer is a great filament dryer.
However it is a very noisy and loud dryer, so much so that it is nearly impossible to have it running anywhere near my workspace.
I measured the noise to be about 55-56 decibels as measured 20cm away from the dryer.
The cause for that noise is caused by the vibrations from the fan, vibrations that run through the whole plastic chassis of the dryer since the fan is screwed straight into the chassis of the dryer without any rubber gaskets.
Also since the dryer is mostly hollow on the inside, that amplifies those vibrations greatly into an annoying sound pitch.
So I made the perfect solution made with TPU for the problem that dampens the noise greatly, changes the annoying pitch to a much lower and tolerable one as well as having the added benefit of better drying performance thanks to the added noise dampening fan shroud.
After adding this simple mod which consists of 3 parts made from Bambu LAB's TPU 95 HF filament, the noise level now measures 42-43 db at 20 cm away from the dryer.
How to install:
1. Unplug the dryer from electricity
2. Unscrew all the screws on the bottom plate of the dryer and lift it off.
3. Unscrew the fan from it's 2x mounting points
4. Install the 2 small printed gaskets. Use a M3 2mm or 3mm bolt on each gasket to screw the gasket into the dryer chassis where the fan was screwed into the chassis. Use the holes with the cutout for a M3 bolt head in those mounting points.
Offset the gaskets so the fan moves a little bit away from the heater element and closer to the PCB.
5. Screw the fan into the other hole of the gaskets with the fan's original fastening screws.
6. Fit the shroud as shown in the pictures. It is a press fit and it should fit perfectly if the mounting gaskets for the fan were installed correctly. You might have to wiggle the shroud a bit while fitting.
7. Put the bottom plate on the dryer again and install the bottom screws
8. Done
P.S. While I didn't have any problems with the fan shroud melting where it is nearest the heater element, even though I set the heat to 70°C, I highly recommend to install aluminum tape onto the shroud as shown in the pictures, just in case so the heating element wont melt the TPU.
Enjoy your much quieter and better performing Sovol SH-02 :)
