1. Context and Initial Problem ⚠️

3D printing generates VOCs and fine particles. Existing solutions on MakerWorld and elsewhere are numerous and generally functional.

I tested several recognized models, each with different approaches.

In practice, several design limitations regularly appear:

  • The addition of an extra HEPA filter in some models, which significantly increases pressure drop, suffocates the fan, and reduces actual airflow
  • The lack of a reliable closure system, with a real risk of the lid opening and spreading activated carbon, making use and maintenance problematic
  • Approximate dimensions in some models, resulting in uncertain fit in the dedicated slot and unreliable attachment

👉 Factual conclusion: existing models work, but their design choices did not suit my needs.

2. Design Approach 🧩

This model is not a copy. It is a critical synthesis.

Method used:

  • Analysis of the strengths of several existing filters
  • Clear identification of their weaknesses
  • Complete redesign based on actual use, not aesthetic appearance

Objective:

Design a simple, effective, durable filter that is truly usable daily ✅

3. Improvements 🔧

Airflow

  • Air path optimized with a honeycomb structure, directly inspired by the design used in original HEPA filters
  • Homogeneous distribution of airflow over the entire activated carbon surface
  • Reduction of unnecessary pressure losses
  • A version without honeycomb is available for those who prefer to fill the filter with carbon without separations

Maintenance 🧰

  • Quick access to activated carbon
  • Securing the lid closure to prevent accidental spillage of carbon inside the printer

4. Why Activated Carbon? 🌱

Activated carbon is currently the most practical solution for makers:

  • Effective adsorption of VOCs
  • Reasonable cost
  • Easily replaceable

Make sure to use steam activated carbon (example: https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0D62FKPRY).

⚠️ This model is specifically designed for Bambu Lab H2 series printers and is not intended to replace a certified industrial system. It aims for a significant improvement, not a false promise.

5. Observed Results 📊

  • Significantly reduced odors
  • Daily use without constraints
  • The model is properly sized to reduce the risk of accidents

6. What This Model is NOT ❌

  • It is not a miracle filter
  • It is not a medical solution
  • It is not a finished industrial product

7. Honest Conclusion 📝

It is not perfect. But it is thoughtful, tested, and fully assumable.
