Boeing 747SP Kit Card
Print Profile(1)

Description
The Boeing 747SP (Special Performance) is a shortened version of the classic Boeing 747, designed for long-range flights. Introduced in the 1970s, it could fly farther and faster than other 747 variants of its time. Because of its shorter fuselage, the 747SP had reduced passenger capacity but improved performance. One of the most famous 747SP aircraft was SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy), which carried a large infrared telescope in its fuselage. Operated by NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), SOFIA was used for astronomical research at high altitudes, above most of Earth’s atmospheric water vapor.
