Description

1. Overview

Whisker Loop is a lightweight, 3D-printed assistive device designed to support blind cats by extending tactile perception around the head. The device forms a flexible loop that provides early tactile contact with nearby obstacles, helping cats adapt more safely to new environments without restricting normal movement.

The design is intended to be low-cost, easily manufacturable, and widely shareable for non-commercial use.

 

2. How It Works

The device places a thin, flexible loop slightly ahead of the cat’s face. The loop is formed by directly trimming a short segment of PLA filament and attaching it to the device. When the loop contacts an obstacle, tactile feedback is transmitted through the loop before the cat’s head or body makes contact, allowing the cat to adjust its movement direction.

The loop remains movable to avoid interfering with normal behavior and exploration.

 

3. Key Design Features

  • Lightweight construction (approximately 7 g) to minimize physical burden
  • Multiple wearing configurations (standard and crossed-loop) to adapt to different neck proportions
  • Cross-shaped buckle geometry for adjustable fit and loop orientation
  • Breakaway safety socket designed to detach automatically if the loop becomes snagged
  • Non-toxic, bio-based PLA material suitable for everyday use

4. Safety Notes

This device is not a medical product and should always be used under supervision, especially during initial adaptation. Regular inspection is recommended to ensure all components remain intact.

When inserting the PLA filament into the socket to form the loop, do not use glue or permanent adhesives to fix the connection. The loop is designed to detach automatically from the socket in the event of snagging or hanging risk. Securing the filament permanently may compromise this safety mechanism.

Discontinue use immediately if signs of discomfort or abnormal behavior are observed.
