Description

I needed a way to keep the lid open on my Maytag top-loading washing machine while it was filling with water. I buy my laundry detergent in bulk, which comes with a measuring cup that needs to be rinsed out after pouring. With the lid safety switch engaged, I couldn’t rinse the cup during a wash cycle, so leftover detergent would sit in the cup, harden over time, and eventually make a sticky mess in my cupboard.

To solve this, I disassembled and modeled the existing locking latch, then designed a removable key that allows the washer to run with the lid open. This makes it easy to rinse the detergent cup immediately while the machine is filling.

I added a few key design features to improve usability:

  • A grip at the top for easy insertion and removal
  • A midway stopper that positions the latch at the perfect height, making the key slide in and out smoothly and consistently

This simple modification has been extremely useful, and I’m very happy to finally have a clean detergent cupboard again.

Works for what I need it for, holding the lid open enough to dry without having it hanging open. That said, just making sure those of you using "bulk" detergents, you're supposed to just throw the cup in with the load. No need to rinse it if you do that like the cup even says...............
