Lockheed D-21 Reconnaissance Drone | Free Release (SR-71 8K Stretch Goal)

As promised, here is the free D-21 reconnaissance drone, unlocked as the 8000 USD stretch goal and released before Christmas for everyone.

A small but iconic piece of the SR-71 MasterBuilds project, available to print and enjoy right away.

The D-21 follows the sleek lines of the Blackbird and is designed with the same MasterBuilds level detail and precision, now as a free release. While compact, it carries the same engineering focused approach as the full scale models. This release is meant to make the SR-71 project more accessible, offering a small tangible piece of it to those who may not be able to support the campaign directly, and a closer look for anyone considering joining the mission.

This release includes an exclusive ground trolley accessory, a red print in place service cart used to transport the drone on the ground. The trolley features fully rolling print in place wheels, making it both a functional and satisfying build.

The adapter for mounting the D-21 on top of the SR-71 will be released together with the full SR-71 MasterBuild. It is not included in this standalone free release.

Fun facts

• The real D-21 was a Mach 3+ reconnaissance drone developed by Lockheed’s Skunk Works.

• It was originally carried by the M-21, a variant of the A-12, the aircraft family that later evolved into the SR-71.

• The program flew between 1964 and 1971 and was ultimately cancelled after a fatal mid air collision during a launch test and repeated mission failures.

• After the M-21 accident, the D-21 was later launched from a modified B-52, but none of the operational missions were fully successful.

• Designed to fly above 90000 ft, it remains one of the fastest unmanned aircraft ever built.

I want to sincerely thank you all for the incredible support this year. At the beginning of the year, I could not have imagined my MakerWorld profile reaching where it is today. This free release of a meaningful part of the SR-71 project is my way of giving something back to the community that made it all possible.

Enjoy the build and thank you for being part of the journey.

Bence
