📜 Detailed Model Description

Bring a piece of American Civil War history to life with these historically inspired, full-scale replica belt buckles. This package includes the two most iconic buckle plates from the conflict: the Union "US" Oval Plate and the Confederate "CS" Oval Plate.

The Union "US" Oval Plate

This model is designed to replicate the classic, die-stamped oval plate worn by Union enlisted men, especially those in the infantry and cavalry. It features the bold, raised "US" initials on a slightly convex, highly polished surface. The dimensions are scaled for historical accuracy, perfect for reenactment, costume, or display.

The Confederate "CS" Oval Plate

In contrast to the mass-produced Union plate, this model captures the look of the more irregular, sand-cast plates often used by the Confederate States. It features the raised "CS" initials. Due to the less standardized manufacturing in the South, this model is designed with a slightly rougher, more antique finish to reflect the craftsmanship often seen in original Confederate buckles.

Key CAD & Print Features:

  • Print-in-Place Buckle Back: Both models include a simple, integrated back for attaching to a standard belt strap (approximately 1.75 inches / 45mm wide), designed for easy assembly and printing.
  • Faux-Metal Finish: Optimized for printing in a silk gold, silk brass, or brown filament, with a smooth front face that minimizes layer lines for an authentic metallic look.
  • Scale: Modeled to be roughly 85mm wide x 55mm tall (approx. 3.3 x 2.2 inches), which is a common size for these historical plates.

🧐 The History Behind the Buckles

These two plates tell the industrial story of the Civil War (1861-1865).

Union "US" Oval:

The Union's superior industrial capacity allowed them to mass-produce these brass oval plates via die-stamping. These buckles were issued in the hundreds of thousands and became the standard for most enlisted Federal troops. Their uniform shape and finish are a testament to the North's organized logistics and manufacturing power. An original, like this design is based on, is the most common buckle relic found today on Civil War battlefields.

Confederate "CS" Oval:

The South lacked the industrial might for mass die-stamping. As a result, many Confederate buckles were sand-cast by local foundries or even individual metalworkers. This meant "CS" plates varied widely in size, shape, and quality. The non-regulation "CS" oval, while its widespread use is debated by historians, is an iconic symbol of the Confederacy's struggle to equip its soldiers and their reliance on non-standardized gear. Our model reflects the distinctive, rugged appearance of these less common but highly sought-after relics.
