Description
I designed and built a completely custom, 3D printed remote focus system specifically designed for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K in naked configuration, mounted on an FPV drone and paired with the Laowa 7.5mm lens
The project originated from the need to have precise and reliable focus control in flight, while maintaining low weight, compactness, and robustness, fundamental requirements in cinematic FPV
Focus System
The heart of the project is a 3D printed motion transmission mechanism, designed to interface directly with the Laowa 7.5mm focus ring
The system is driven by a servo, controlled via PWM, which ensures:
- Smooth and progressive movement
- Good precision even on micro-adjustments
- Reliability against typical FPV flight vibrations
The entire system is designed to reduce mechanical play and backlash, maintaining a consistent and repeatable response
Remote Control
Control is performed completely remotely via a TBS receiver, utilizing a dedicated PWM output for the focus servo
This allows the pilot or camera operator to:
- Adjust focus in real-time during flight
- Integrate control directly into the radio transmitter
- Customize curves, endpoints, and response speed
The system is compatible with typical FPV control logic, making it extremely flexible
Housing and Camera Integration
I also designed and 3D printed a dedicated housing which neatly and securely accommodates:
- Servo
- Receiver
- Wiring
The housing is fixed directly onto the Blackmagic 4K naked sensor, becoming an integral part of the camera block
This approach allows for:
- Minimizing bulk and external wiring
- Improving the rigidity of the assembly
- Facilitating mounting on the FPV drone
The design takes into account heat dissipation, accessibility, and quick maintenance
Project Evolution
The system is designed to be modular and upgradable
An evolved version with handles is already planned, which will allow for:
- Use also in handheld or ground rig configurations
- Greater ergonomics during setup and testing
- Further system versatility beyond FPV
Conclusion
This project represents a complete custom solution for FPV remote focus, combining mechanical design, 3D printing, electronic integration, and radio control
It was developed with a practical, real-flight-oriented approach, demonstrating how it's possible to achieve professional functionalities with tailor-made, lightweight, and efficient solutions
