Print the matrix slow!
Was looking for a way to tell people what station to tune into to hear our Christmas music this year. I tried some existing seed pixel designs, but the print quality wasn't quite what I was looking for, was a little thin, or didn't have an easy way to mount the prop. Here's my entry into this awesome hobby.
The design is an 8x12 matrix designed to be horizontally expandable. Print as many matrix pieces as you need, they fit together with little tabs on the top and bottom. To help hold them in place, print the edge pieces that can go on the top and bottom to add strength to the joint without covering the seeds. I've also included a few ways to mount the matrix. There's an option for ½" EMT with a ¼" bolt, an option that has a few loops in case you'd like to hang it, and another option that has a block with a hole it it that'll fit a zip tie/could be drilled out, etc…
To make it like the pictures, print 3 matrix pieces, 8 edges, then two of the same mounting options. That'll give you a matrix size of 8X32 or 288 pixels that can be configured for vertical or horizontal use. The top and bottom will both need 5 edges/mounting pieces. It's designed so the seams are staggered. Put a little super glue on the connecting edges to help hold it all together. If you're going wide, consider printing multiple mounting pieces to support in a few places.
You can set it up in WLED to be used as a matrix if you like. You can also set it up using the out of box matrix model in xlights. See the pictures for the configuration and wiring diagram. On the effect settings, the 8-8x8 fonts seem to look the best to me. Marry Christmas!
I can't emphasize enough to print the matrix pieces slowly. There's a lot of little twists and turns in a small area. I had some trouble getting a good quality print until I let patience take over and print at a 50% setting on the A1. All the other pieces print fine at higher speeds. Also, don't go too low on the infill, while the part doesn't need to be strong, the flat design is prone to warping if there's not enough infill.
