The Toyota Supra A90, officially launched in 2019, marked the triumphant return of one of Japan’s most iconic sports cars after a two-decade hiatus. Known internally as the GR Supra (for Gazoo Racing), the A90 was developed in collaboration with BMW, sharing its platform and powertrain with the BMW Z4, yet refined and tuned by Toyota to deliver a distinct and purist driving experience that honors the Supra legacy.

At its heart lies a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine—the B58—producing 340 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque in early versions, later increased to 382 horsepower in updated models. Mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, the A90 launches from 0–100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds, sending power exclusively to the rear wheels. While the engine is sourced from BMW, Toyota’s engineers, led by Tetsuya Tada (chief engineer of the GT86), meticulously retuned the suspension, steering, throttle response, and chassis balance to make the Supra feel uniquely Japanese in character—tight, communicative, and playful.

The A90’s chassis is a masterpiece of balance. Its perfect 50:50 weight distribution, adaptive dampers, active differential, and stiff aluminum-steel hybrid structure give it remarkable precision and agility on both road and track. The car sits on a short wheelbase, even shorter than the 86, giving it a lively and responsive feel that evokes the lightweight, rear-drive spirit of the original Supras, particularly the beloved A80.

Design-wise, the A90 Supra strikes a bold and muscular stance. Its long hood, double-bubble roof, wide haunches, and short rear deck give it the classic front-engine, rear-drive proportions of a true sports car. The aggressive aerodynamic bodywork, sculpted intakes, and functional rear spoiler all reflect Toyota’s racing influence, while design cues such as the curved headlights and ducktail rear subtly echo the lines of the A80.

The A90 Supra has since spawned performance variants, including the Supra 2.0, powered by a lighter 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 258 horsepower, offering a more agile balance, and later, the 2023 manual transmission option for purists craving three-pedal engagement.

While its BMW partnership sparked debate among enthusiasts, the Toyota Supra A90 quickly proved itself a true successor to the legendary nameplate—a car engineered for balance, precision, and driving joy. It represents Toyota’s return to its performance roots, combining German engineering efficiency with Japanese tuning philosophy to deliver one of the most dynamic and emotionally engaging sports cars of its generation.
